In tensile testing, the ultimate (breaking) strength is easy to measure because it occurs at a clear failure point. However, yield strength is more difficult to pinpoint, especially in manual testing setups, because it relies on detecting the start of permanent deformation, which is not always obvious. This can lead to slight variations or interpretation differences, especially in high-strength steels like SCM440 that don’t always show a distinct yield point. Elongation, on the other hand, reflects the ductility of the material, how much it can stretch before fracture. For SCM440, our actual tensile tests conducted at MIRDC show an elongation range of 9–17%. This range is wider than theoretical values because elongation is manually calculated from the change in gauge length before and after fracture. Small differences in gauge marking, fracture location, and operator reading contribute to this variability. Unlike theoretical numbers, our results represent real-world testing conditions, providing a more practical view of SCM440’s ductility.
