What is Material Testing

Material Testing ensures the quality and performance of metals, focusing on properties like tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. It is critical for validating the material’s suitability for specific applications, especially in structural components like bolts and steel.

Here are the accepted Testing Method Standards:

  • ASTM F606: Used for mechanical testing of bolts with threads, such as those specified in ASTM A325 and F1554 Full Size Product or Finished Product.
  • ASTM E8: Covers the testing of tensile properties of metals, particularly through the use of machined specimens.
  • ASTM A370: The general procedure for testing the mechanical properties of various steels.

These standards ensure materials meet the required strength and durability in engineering applications.

As Per ASTM F1554-18 (specification covers straight, bent, headed, and headless anchor bolts – also known as anchor rods)
14.2.l Tensile tests on bar stock shall be conducted in accordance with Test Methods and Definitions A370.(the raw material used before forming it into bolts or other components)
14.2.2 Tensile tests on finished anchor bolts shall be conducted in accordance with the Axial Tension Test Method in F606/F606M.(Finished Product/ Threaded Bolt)

Correct Testing method for externally threaded fasteners

The appropriate method for testing externally threaded fasteners, such as those specified in ASTM A307, ASTM A325 & ASTM F1554, is ASTM F606. This standard provides detailed procedures for testing the mechanical properties of bolts, including tensile strength, yield strength, and proof load.

  • ASTM A370 is not applicable for threaded fasteners because it is a general test method for the mechanical testing of steel products, but it does not specifically cover the unique characteristics of threaded fasteners like bolts.
  • ASTM E8 may be used in conjunction with F606, particularly when testing the tensile properties of long bolts, as F606 directs the use of E8 for specimens that must be machined to fit into the testing apparatus.

This ensures accurate testing of the bolt’s mechanical properties in accordance with ASTM standards.

Where to Test and What Lab to Choose:

MIRDC

At 7 Tiger Metal Works, we only recognize test results from the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC). As a government agency under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), MIRDC follows rigorous standards and is accredited under PNS ISO/IEC 17025:2017, which guarantees the accuracy and reliability of their testing methods. Their adherence to these international standards ensures that all test results meet industry benchmarks for quality and precision, making them the ideal for testing our products.

Sample Testing

In line with our commitment to delivering top-quality products and services, we conduct sample testing through the Mechanical Department at the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our testing methods.

Below, we have tested a sample of our raw material, SCM440 (without thread), and our finished product, A325/SCM440 (threaded bolt). These samples demonstrate the correct testing procedures for ASTM A325 bolts.

As Per ASTM E8

This photo demonstrates the ASTM E8 procedure, used to determine the tensile yield strength and elongation of our A325/SCM440 bolts (finished product with thread), in accordance with the requirements under ASTM F606. Due to the extended length of our bolts, the testing process is redirected to ASTM E8 to ensure accurate and compliant testing protocols for long bolts.
